Job Summary
The Medical Records Coordinator is responsible for making sure all patient records are kept organized, safe, and accurate. You will be in charge of storing, updating, and helping other people access these records when they need them. You will also work with other healthcare workers to ensure patients get the right care at the right time.
In this job, you’ll work with both paper records and computer systems to keep everything in order. It’s an important job because good records help doctors and nurses provide the best care to patients.
Responsibilities
As a Medical Records Coordinator, your daily tasks will include:
- Organize Medical Records: You will make sure all medical records (both paper and digital) are organized in a way that makes them easy to find.
- Data Entry: You will enter patient information into the computer system and make sure it is accurate.
- Ensure Privacy: You will keep patient information private and make sure only the right people can access it. This is very important for protecting patients’ personal information.
- Help Healthcare Workers: You will assist doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers in finding the right patient records when they need them.
- Work with Computer Systems: You will use a computer to manage and update electronic health records (EHR) to make sure they are up to date.
- Respond to Requests: You may get calls or messages from people asking for patient information. You will help answer these requests in a timely and careful manner.
- Follow Rules: You will follow all the laws and rules about how to handle patient records. This helps protect patients and makes sure everything is done correctly.
- Support the Team: You will help the team by working with other departments and making sure all records are stored properly for audits or reviews.
Qualifications
Required Skills:
To do well in this job, you should have these skills:
- Good Attention to Detail: You need to be careful and make sure everything is accurate and correct.
- Organized: You should be able to keep everything in order, whether it’s on paper or in the computer system.
- Communication Skills: You will need to talk and write clearly so that others understand you.
- Confidentiality: You need to keep patient information private and follow the rules to protect their personal data.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Sometimes you may face challenges. You will need to think of solutions to help solve problems quickly.
- Tech Skills: You should be comfortable using computers and medical record systems to keep everything updated.
Preferred Skills:
These skills will make you a strong candidate, but they are not required:
- Experience with Medical Record Systems: If you have worked with computers that store medical records before, that’s a plus!
- Know About Privacy Rules: It helps if you know about laws that protect patient privacy, like HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
- Basic Medical Terms: If you know some medical words, it can help you understand the records better.
- Experience in Healthcare: If you’ve worked in a doctor’s office or hospital before, that’s great, but not required!
Education and Experience
- Education: You need to have finished high school or have something equal, like a GED. If you have a college degree in a related subject, that’s a plus, but not required.
- Experience: You should have at least 1 or 2 years of experience working in an office, especially in a medical setting, but we will train you if needed!
- Certifications: If you have certifications like RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician), that’s a plus but not required.

Salary and Benefits
Salary: The pay for this job is between $45,000 and $55,000 per year. The exact pay will depend on your experience.
